Week 5 AP Football Poll: ECU #23

The Week 5 AP Football Poll was released on Sunday and it included some very satisfying developments and some poll weirdness that can only be expected for some reason. The big news of course is that East Carolina jumped into the poll at #23. This was a result of their demolition of the North Carolina Tar Heels 70-41 on Saturday afternoon. The Duke Blue Devils remain teetering on the edge, once again topping the others receiving votes category.

The poll weirdness this week had to do with the treatment of Mississippi State, who jumped to number 14 in the poll from unranked. LSU, the team they beat, fell only to #17. Clemson fell out of the poll with its second loss. The team rated ahead of East Carolina is Ohio State who lost to Virginia Tech, who ECU beat.
This sort of changes things for the Pirates, as they enter the American Athletic Conference season. They will no longer be the hunters, but the hunted. Every team will circle them on the schedule as long as they remained ranked. I think this ECU has plenty of senior leadership to deal with this, but they can’t get too big-headed. UCF, Houston, and Cincy are good teams that ECU should not sleep on.
