Appalachian State Mountaineers Blocked by Southern Miss Eagles 21-20
Sometimes you get soooo close and then you remember that that only matters in horseshoes and hand grenades. After finding a way to climb back from a 14-0 deficit, the Appalachian State Mountaineers found themselves down again in the fourth quarter. One final drive took them into the end zone as quarterback Taylor Lamb found Simms McElfresh. There was just one matter left, the extra point. This time it was the Mountaineers on the wrong side of a blocked kick that decided the game.

Play of the Game
The game was not decided until Dasman McCullum blocked the Zach Matics attempt at an xtra point with 19 seconds to go in the game. It deflated the comeback that App State was working on, and once the Eagles recovered the ensuing onside kick it was all over. This is why teams have to kick extra points and we do not use NFL Blitz rules.
Were You There When…
Lamb had a good game in his first start at quarterback. He went 28 for 42 with 262 passing yards and 2 scores. The biggest pass had to be the one from two yards out to McElfresh, which led to one of the most bipolar moments you can have in a football game. One moment, you are going to overtime and anything is possible. The next it is all over and there is nothing you can do about it.

I Want Him on My Team
John Law, ILB
In order for Appalachian State to find their way back into the game, they needed defensive stops. Law was in the middle of the defensive effort to provide those stops. He recorded 8 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss, providing a strong core for his defensive teammates.
Final Thoughts
This was a game I flipped on, and got bit. It is still hard to go on the road and win in college football. The Mountaineers should learn from this loss, because they were right there the whole game. This was a game that said they belonged in FBS. Their reward is a trip to Statesboro, Ga to face a dangerous Georgia Southern team.
