Webb Simpson Makes US Ryder Cup Team

In the end, did Tom Watson ultimately believe he was better with Webb Simpson than without him?

I suppose it does not really matter now, as Webb Simpson was named as one of captain’s picks to the US Ryder Cup Team along with Keegan Bradley and Hunter Mahan. Simpson’s chances seemed to go up and down, but in the end the body of work survived Watson’s smell test. Simpson won the 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Tournament and finished with 9 top ten finishes in 23 starts this year.

Simpson was 13th in FedEx Points during the season and currently sits 19th on the FedEx Cup playoff list. He also finished 15th in Ryder Cup points.

The US team looks like this:

Bubba Watson
Jimmy Walker
Phil Mickleson
Patrick Reed
Zach Johnson
Rickie Fowler
Jordan Spieth
Jim Furyk
Hunter Mahan
Keegan Bradley
Webb Simpson

The European Team was also named earlier today. Whether Captain Tom Watson was using some gamesmanship by letting the Europeans go first, only he knows. Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, and Stephen Gallacher were the captain’s picks on the European side. This means the European opposition looks like this:

Rory McIlroy
Henrik Stenson
Victor Dubuisson

That will be a tall order as McIlroy has gotten hot and stayed hot throughout the later half of the season and will be playing great golf when the Ryder Cup starts. Stenson, Garcia, and Rose have also had good rounds lately. Then there is the lurking form of Ian Poulter, who always seems to come around for the Ryder Cup regardless of what he was doing before it.

The Americans will need to maximize the play of their newcomers Walker and Reid, and get the steady rounds from Johnson, Simpson, and Mahan that they are capable of. If Phil Mickleson has a surprise or two in the bag, so much the better.
