Kelby Brown Out for Season
Duke University has announced that senior linebacker Kelby Brown was suffered a left ACL and will miss the upcoming football season.
Any loss for the bend-don’t-break Duke defense is a problem, but this one hurts more than most. Brown was responsible for 114 tackles last year, and a big reason that the Duke defense held up over the course of the 2013 season. Brown also got into the backfield for 11 tackles for loss.

Brown had seen a cavalcade of honors since the end of the 2013 season. He was an All-ACC selection last year. He was present on several of the defensive award watch lists for the upcoming season, like the Butkus and the Bednarik.
The other sad thing about this is that this is Brown’s THIRD knee injury. Brown had torn his right ACL on two occasions. His good year in 2013 was really the first healthy year he had had. Now his left knee goes. Given the timing of the injury, it will be interesting to see if Duke applies for a medical redshirt.

Busting Brackets
Duke has plugged junior linebacker Deion Williams into Brown’s place according to Laura Keeley of the Raleigh News and Observer. That is easier said than done. Duke runs a 4-2-5 defense and its biggest weakness has been the defensive line. Brown and David Helton were responsible for cleaning up the line’s mess last year. The line is arguably worse this year, and now Helton will be leaned on even more to compensate for their mistakes.
Another player with greater responsibilities will likely be safety Jeremy Cash. Cash was already engaged in a lot of tackles last year, leading the ACC. Now he will have to keep that run support role in the back of his mind.
