Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs Elon Phoenix Preview

facebooktwitterreddit

A new season means a fresh start for the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. They would love to get off to a fast start this year and the Elon Phoenix are the guys on the schedule. Scheduling an FCS team in game one is usually the FBS team’s way of getting an easy win while working out the kinks. For the Phoenix, they have to be hoping that Wake Forest’s offense has not quite figured things out. If that is true then the Phoenix could potentially poach the matchup.

Date: September 3
Time: 7:00 PM
TV: ESPN3
Venue: BB&T Field

Opponent: Elon Phoenix (0-0)

Like the Demon Deacons, Elon also went through a bit of transition last year. They had a new coach and new league to play in and it went about the same as Wake did. Elon finished 1-11 on the year and 0-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association. Their sole victory came against the Charlotte 49ers.

What We Need to See

Wake Forest needs to show some offensive consistency. This must start with the running game. Keeping John Wolford’s attempts down will be a good sign that Wake is moving the ball on schedule. Even better would be a situation where Wolford gets an early night with the backups coming in.

On defense, it would be good to see Tylor Harris in the Elon backfield for much of the time that he is in the game. Disruption of the Elon offense will suppress the score and keep things doable for the untested Wake Forest offense.

Wake is closer to its turnaround than Elon is to its. The result should be a game where there are not a lot of points, but the margin is comfortable enough for the Deacs. It will only get harder for Wake Forest from here, so any gained momentum would be precious.
