AAC Preseason Basketball Poll Released: ECU Pirates 10th

The basketball coaches of the American Athletic conference have spoken and they like defending national champion Connecticut to be the conference champion this year in basketball. They also chose UConn forward Ryan Boatright as Player of the Year.

Tar Heel alum Larry Brown’s SMU squad was chosen to finish second and almost had as many first place votes as UConn did. SMU did have more players (two) on the All-Conference team than UConn (one).

More from East Carolina Pirates

The story was not quite as cheery for the East Carolina Pirates. After a 17-17 season last year, the ECU Pirates were picked to finish tenth in the league. That is only one spot better than last. This was kind of a surprise, because Tar Heel alum Jeff Lebo’s squad returns four starters this year. That kind of continuity is usually a base to build on.

The American Athletic conference website did their best to play up each team, so they pointed out that East Carolina had reached the CollegeInsider.com Tournament for the second time last year. I knew the tournament existed, but not that it was a key achievement. Both the AAC and Matt Norlander of CBS Sports picked sophomore wing Caleb White as the player with the most impact.

The Preseason AAC Coaches Poll:

UConn Huskies 96 (6)
SMU Mustangs 94 (5)
Memphis Tigers 82
