Wake Forest Whiffs vs Syracuse, 30-7

It started off so well. After trading some drives, Wake Forest put together a drive that brought home the first score of the game. Then that was it. It was all Syracuse Orange after that. Wake Forest managed only 169 yards of offense on the game. Freshman quarterback AJ Long of Syracuse had 171 passing on the game in comparison.

More from Wake Forest Demon Deacons

For the Cuse, it was not Prince-Tyson Gulley who purple rained in the knockout of Wake Forest, but Devante McFarlane. McFarlane had ten carries for 114 yards. Even McFarlane could not find the end zone on the Wake Forest defense. Syracuse scored two of its touchdowns on defense. They returned a pick six on Wake quarterback John Wolford and stripped backup Tyler Cameron and returned that fumble for a score.

Play of the Game

Syracuse’s defensive end Robert Welsh intercepted Wolford and returned it 42 yards for the score to make it 17-7. The score was not at that moment out of reach, but given Wake’s success on offense and the hit to Wolford’s confidence, this was not a good sign.

Were You There When…

Wolford hit tight end Cam Serigne with a touchdown pass and a 7-0 lead. In those few moments it seemed as if anything was possible. The defense had gotten a couple stops and the offense had found the end zone. It was all downhill from here.

Final Thoughts

The score really did not reflect the way Wake played this game. Without those two turnovers, the score of this game is 16-7 and Wake would still have a chance to win. Wake keeps fighting, I just do not want to tell them that their best chance to win a conference game was this one. Boston College and NC State are the next best chances, and the Eagles are looking good right now.
