55. 2382. 48. 2391. Final

I am pretty sure that if I told you there was a game where the Appalachian State Mountaineers scored 48 and Marcus Cox and Terrence Upshaw each ran for over a hundred yards, your response would be: Yay! Sadly those things did happen and Taylor Lamb threw for 397 yards and the Mountaineers still lost. How?

Turnovers. App State had two interceptions and two fumbles, and while Liberty tried to return the favor with a fumble of their own, that was too many turnovers. Statistically, App won every facet except those turnovers.

In the second quarter, Liberty scored on a fumble recovery to break a 21-21 deadlock and take a 28-21 lead. From that point, the third quarter saw a lot of back and forth scoring, but ended with a 41-40 Liberty lead. The final quarter saw a final App lead at 48-41, but Liberty scored with 7:43 left to tie it. Then Liberty would score the only points of overtime to win the game 55-48.

Play of the Game:

In the overtime, quarterback Josh Woodrum found Darrin Peterson for the score for the Flames. The Flames defense held App scoreless in the latter half of the overtime period to win.

Mountaineers punter Bentlee Crichter decided to score on the old ‘have the opponent misplay the punt’ play. Liberty’s Dakota Kelly obliged by losing control of the ball which Aaron Krah picked up and scored. This game had all the offense you could wish for, but there are times when those scores are just more satisfying.

    Final Thoughts

It was a tough one to lose for the Mountaineers. The offense seemed to play well and yet they could not put it together on defense. The good news is that schools like Idaho and Georgia State are still on the schedule. The bad news is that App is sitting at 1-5 after half the season has been completed.
