Isaiah Jones: How an ECU Player Ticks

facebooktwitterreddit

Brian Haines has a nice story on East Carolina receiver Isaiah Jones and his father, East Carolina alumnus and former Dallas Cowboys linebacker Robert Jones. The current Jones is quarterback Shane Carden’s number two target behind senior Justin Hardy. Jones will always emerge to make a big play, even if you have not heard from him for awhile.

More from East Carolina Pirates

SMU heard from him plenty last Saturday. Jones talked about being overlooked by the schools in Texas as a high school player and how that bothered him. You wonder if that included the Dallas-based Mustangs as he caught 9 passes for 130 yards to help burn that team 45-24.

In the article, Carden talked about the growing relationship between senior quarterback and sophomore wide receiver. You wonder if part of that was because of their common origin as Texas guys who ended up in Greenville, NC to play their college ball.

The article also seemed to hint at a growing common bond between the players at East Carolina. Hardy also talked about having a common connection to Jones in being overlooked. In Hardy’s case, this was completely so. Hardy started off his college experience as a walk-on. It seems motivation is easy to find in the ECU huddle.

  • The fact that East Carolina has had success with these guys has to relate back to Ruffin McNeil’s time at Texas Tech, when he would have had to recruit the state. That would put him and several members of his staff in good position to assess the kids that Mack Brown was passing on.

The last thing that I would point out is that Isaiah Jones believes he is a winner. Whether he got view from his father’s success in the pros or simply from looking over his own body of work does not matter. He has become an important part of this Pirate team. The real test of Jones will be the example he can set for next year’s squad when he will no longer have Carden and Hardy.
