Mike Davis ‘Sort of Doubtful’ for ECU game

facebooktwitterreddit

East Carolina laid the down the blade against the Eagles of North Carolina Central, and many Pirate fans are already looking forward to next week’s game against the South Carolina Gamecocks. They may be even more excited about it now, since Texas A&M took a pass happy spread offense and lit the Gamecocks up 52-28. Perhaps South Carolina is beatable, a thought that I did not have when I wrote the East Carolina preview a while back.

More from East Carolina Pirates

There is another piece of news out of that South Carolina-Texas A&M game that East Carolina fans can take note of. Mike Davis, the starting South Carolina tailback, had been operating with bruised ribs. That injury almost kept him out of the Texas A&M game. When he played anyway, he made it worse. Coach Steve Spurrier is now calling Davis ‘sort of doubtful’ for the game against ECU.

There is no set injury policy in the NCAA. Coaches can choose to designate injuries however they want, since all they are trying to do with that information is throw other coaches off the scent. If a guy won’t play, but you think the opposing defense might scheme for him, you say he is questionable and then make him inactive at kickoff.

  • Spurrier’s line on Davis fits into this logic. If he has scratched Davis, he doesn’t want you to know. If he plans to play Davis anyway, he wants to have to spend time looking at how they might use his backups.

Whether a hobbled Davis plays or not, this game between South Carolina and East Carolina looks a lot more interesting and probably has become THE game to see this weekend from the North Carolina FBS schools. No more FCS teams, Pirate fans. Real football is on its way.
