Timeline for Panthers Coaching Hires Revealed by GM
By Chris Schad
The Carolina Panthers are, like many teams, retooling their coaching staff in the weeks after the 2024 season. While last year didn’t go as the Panthers had hoped, they feel a few coaching changes could help them get where they want to be.
The moves came early as safeties coach Bert Watts and outside linebackers coach Tem Lukabu parted ways with Carolina. They also fired Kevin King and health, performance and nutrition director Andrew Althoff, giving general manager Dan Morgan a lengthy to-do list in the coming weeks.
Dan Morgan Gives Late-February Timeline to Fill Carolina Panthers Coaching Staff
Morgan gave a big update on the staff search as the Panthers’ front office attended the East/West Shrine Bowl in Frisco this weekend. According to The Charlotte Observer’s Mike Kaye, he didn’t mention any names to fill the roles but said the secondary coaches are expected to be filled before the NFL Combine is held in late February.
Carolina will bring back defensive coordinator Elijah Evero next season but he will return with a new-look staff. The Panthers fired Watts, Lukabu and quality control coach Bobby Maffei after allowing 534 points this season. In addition to setting the record for most points allowed in a 17-game season, the Panthers also led the NFL with 35 passing touchdowns and the league’s sixth-lowest turnover rate at 8.6 percent.
While the defense will have changes, so will the training staff after the dismissal of King and Althoff earlier this month. King started with the organization as the assistant athletic trainer and was promoted to head trainer in 2020 while Althoff arrived with former head coach Matt Rhule from Baylor University that same year.
The Panthers were bitten hard by the injury bug with six players finishing the season on injured reserve. With a different training staff and some new faces with Evero, Carolina will look to take a step forward next season.
