Recently Cut Panthers Veteran Signs With NFC Contender
By Jovan Alford
Earlier this week, the Carolina Panthers parted ways with veteran defensive lineman Jonathan Harris. Harris appeared in seven games with the Panthers after Carolina claimed him off the Miami Dolphins practice squad in October.
The 28-year-old defensive end played a considerable amount of snaps on defense (26 percent), recording 10 total tackles and a fumble recovery. However, Carolina wanted to go in a different direction with only two games left in the regular season.
To take his spot on the 53-man roster, Carolina signed linebacker Chandler Wooten off the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad on Christmas Eve. It didn't come as a surprise to see Carolina add a linebacker, given their lack of depth due to injuries.
Panthers News: Jonathan Harris Signs With the Minnesota Vikings
As for Harris, it did not take long for him to find his next opportunity. On Thursday, the Minnesota Vikings signed the veteran defensive lineman to their practice squad and released cornerback Kelvin Joseph.
Harris landing in Minnesota could be a blessing in disguise as if he performs well in practice over the last two weeks of the regular season, he might find his way on the field. The former Panthers defender hasn’t seen extended playing time, outside of last season with the Denver Broncos.
Last season with the Broncos, Harris appeared in all 17 games (five starts), producing 43 combined tackles, four quarterback hits, four tackles for loss, and a sack. Harris’ PFF grade from this season isn’t special (49.0), but the Vikings believe he can give them depth heading into the regular season’s final weeks.
Instead of preparing for the offseason, Harris is now gearing up to get the Vikings ready for the NFL playoffs. It's been a wild season for the veteran defensive lineman, who has been all over the country.
