Recent Panthers Coach in the Running for New Job With NFC Contender

The Carolina Panthers finished the season on a high note, improving to 5-12 and securing the No. 8 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. For the first time in a while, the Panthers will have continuity heading into next season, bringing the same head coach and coordinators.

The rest of the non-playoff teams, however, are desperately trying to revamp their coaching staff with the hopes of showing improvement next season. The San Francisco 49ers are among them.

After being one of the most disappointing teams in the league, the 49ers are making changes to their staff. As part of these changes, they interviewed former Panthers interim head coach Chris Tabor for their special teams coordinator opening.

After three straight deep postseason runs, the 49ers finished 6-11 last season, leading to the firing of defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen and special teams coordinator Brian Schneider.

Tabor has naturally emerged as a potential replacement for Schneider, who has been in that role in San Francisco for three seasons. Tabor is one of the more experienced special teams coaches in the NFL, having that position with the Browns, Bears, and the Panthers over the last 13 seasons.

The 53-year-old coach was hired by the Panthers in the 2022 offseason under Matt Rhule. He was retained after the firing of Rhule and the hiring of Frank Reich. When Reich's tenure in Carolina didn't last longer than half a season, Tabor took over as the interim head coach, leading the Panthers to a 1-5 record. He was let go after the 2023 season and hasn't accepted another position since then.
