Star Duke Forward Enters Transfer Portal

Duke forward Mark Mitchell, widely expected to be one of the team's best players in the 2024-25 season, announced on Tuesday that he was entering the transfer portal.

The 6'9", 232 LB big man averaged 11.6 points and 6.0 rebounds for the Blue Devils this season, serving as one of the biggest contributors to a Final Four squad.

This comes as a shock for Duke fans, who expected Mitchell to be one of the leaders with Kyle Filipowski likely heading to the NBA Draft.

A former McDonald's All-American out of Kansas City, Kansas, Mitchell should be one of the most highly-sought after players in the transfer portal. He'll be a junior next year and has two years of major experience, giving him potential value to virtually every program in the country.

Mitchell will leave Duke having started 67 of 70 career games, averaging 10.3 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game while shooting 50.5% from the field. He's not a big threat from the outside, though his defensive versatility and experience make him a valuable player.

It's not yet clear what school Mitchell favors, but he'll likely be courted by some of the top programs across the country. This leaves a massive hole for the Blue Devils by someone considered one of the program's leaders, so head coach Jon Scheyer will need to move quickly to find a replacement.

In the meantime, Mitchell's presence will be missed. Duke took a big step forward this season, though it appears next year's team will be far weaker.
