Potential Trade Suitor Emerges For Miles Sanders
By Cem Yolbulan
The Carolina Panthers have had plenty of disappointment in 2023. Nothing seemingly worked for the team posted a 2-15 record with arguably the worst offense in the league. There were obviously many reasons for why the team struggled so badly on that end and Miles Sanders was certainly one of them.
After signing a four-year, $25.4 million deal with the Panthers in the offseason, Sanders had easily the worst season of his career. After making the Pro Bowl the year prior with the Eagles, recording 1,269 yards and 11 touchdowns, Sanders averaged 3.3 yards per carry in Carolina and ended the season with 432 yards and one touchdown.
The former second-round pick has been on the chopping block since then. The Panthers used a second-round pick on talented rusher Jonathon Brooks and they have higher expectations from Chuba Hubbard as he enters his fourth year in the league. This makes it difficult for Sanders to get enough touches in the backfield.
Fortunately for the Panthers, there may be a team willing to trade for Sanders. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the former Penn State standout is on the "shortlist" of the Dallas Cowboys.
This makes plenty of sense. The Cowboys lost Tony Pollard in free agency and replaced him with Ezekiel Elliott. They boast a running back rotation of Zeke, Rico Dowdle, and Royce Freeman. Considering the serious decline Elliott has shown last season, that is not an elite group for a team trying to contend for the Super Bowl.
Getting out of Sanders' contract and giving more reps to Brooks from the start would be a smart move by the Panthers. It was a move that made sense last offseason but it simply didn't work out. It may be time to move on.
