Panthers Sign Former Pro Bowl Pass Rusher to Bolster Defense
By Cem Yolbulan
The Carolina Panthers frustrated their fans earlier in the offseason by losing star edge rusher Brian Burns. Obviously, it will be difficult to replace a 25-year-old Pro Bowler defender like Burns, but the Panthers may have done as good of a job as one could have expected.
According to Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are signing Jadeveon Clowney to a two-year, $20 million deal in free agency.
Panthers Sign Jadeveon Clowney to Bolster Defense
Despite recently turning 31, Clowney had one of his best seasons as a pro in 2023. Appearing in every game for the Baltimore Ravens, the former first overall pick registered 9.5 sacks, 24 solo tackles, and 19 QB hits. He played an integral part on one of the best defenses in the NFL as he helped lead them to the AFC championship game.
Clowney may have never lived up to the pre-NFL expectations as he dealt with various injuries in his first few seasons. However, he was able to bounce back admirably and carved out a highly productive NFL career at the end. He has spent the last five seasons bouncing around the league on one-year deals, but he has been an effective member of solid defensive units during this span.
Signing an experienced veteran of Clowney's caliber is going to do wonders for the Panthers as they attempt to get back to respectability next season.
Carolina currently is +1000 underdog to win the NFC South. But that is far from their goal next season. After six seasons with a losing record, Panthers fans would be more than thrilled to have a competitive team in 2024.
