The Panthers could look to bring back veteran cornerback Stephon Gilmore, who was with the team in 2021.

The Carolina Panthers have been quite busy this offseason as they’ve overhauled their defense, trading Brian Burns to the New York Giants and signing veterans (Dane Jackson, Jordan Fuller, and Nick Scott) to the secondary.

The Panthers had a fantastic pass defense last year, allowing 171.5 yards per game (third-best in the NFL). However, that isn’t stopping them from exploring more additions to the cornerback room, which will look different with Donte Jackson in Pittsburgh.

Panthers Rumors: Carolina Reached Out to Veteran Stephon Gilmore

Joe Person of The Athletic reported Tuesday that the Panthers reached out to former Dallas Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore about a potential return. Gilmore played with Carolina in 2021, where he became a Pro Bowler.

During that season with the Panthers, the former Rock Hill, South Carolina native recorded 16 combined tackles, two pass deflections, and two interceptions in eight games. After playing in Carolina, Gilmore moved on to the Indianapolis Colts, where he recorded 66 combined tackles, 11 pass deflections, and two interceptions.

Last season with Dallas, Gilmore did not show any signs of slowing down. The 33-year-old had 68 combined tackles, 13 pass deflections, and two interceptions. He posted a 55.8 completion percentage allowed on targets, an 82.7 pass rating allowed when targeted, and gave up four receiving touchdowns.

It’s not surprising to see the Panthers reach out to the veteran cornerback, as he could step in and star alongside Jaycee Horn. Earlier in the offseason, it seemed as if Gilmore could return to Dallas, but the Cowboys haven’t made many moves because of their salary cap situation.
