Panthers Create Kicker Competition With Exciting Undrafted Free Agent
By Cem Yolbulan
The Carolina Panthers had a busy 2024 NFL Draft where they addressed plenty of their glaring needs. Mostly focusing on the offensive side of the ball, general manager Dan Morgan and head coach Dave Canales did an admirable job giving Bryce Young more playmakers for next season.
It looks like the Panthers are not done adding to their roster even after the draft. According to Joe Person of The Athletic, Carolina is signing undrafted free agent Harrison Mevis. The kicker out of Missouri has been a fan favorite there for the past four seasons, earning the nickname "the Thicker Kicker".

The six-foot, 241-lb kicker emerged as one of the premier kickers in college football over the last few seasons. He has made 147/148 extra points in his career and is 86/103 on field goals (83.5%). Thanks to his physical tools, he can generate a lot of power on his kicks, allowing him to regularly hit 50+ yard field goals. He broke the SEC record last season with a 61-yard field goal to win the game for the Missouri Tigers.
The Panthers already have Eddy Piñeiro as their starting kicker. The former undrafted free agent out of Florida signed with the Panthers following the injury to Zane Gonzalez in 2022 and became a solid kicker for the team. Over the last two years, Piñeiro is 83-of-91 in field goals and an impressive 10-of-12 on field goals over 50 yards.
There will likely be a training camp competition between the two kickers. "The Thicker Kicker" needs to prove himself to be able to get the starting job over the more experienced veteran Piñeiro.
