NC State Finds DJ Horne Replacement in Transfer Portal
By Joe Summers
NC State has been busy in the transfer portal and found a potential DJ Horne replacement on Wednesday, landing the commitment of former Louisville guard Mike James.
The 6'5" rising junior averaged 12.6 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game for the Cardinals this season, also displaying promising outside shooting ability. Horne was the Wolfpack's leading scorer this year (16.4 PPG) and he's difficult to replace, though James is a strong option as NC State tries to build off its magical Final Four run.
He had a season-high 26 points in a win over Miami in January and even dropped 20 the following game against the Wolfpack, giving the program a glimpse of what may come next season.
NC State News: Wolfpack Land Louisville G Mike James
Originally from Orlando, Florida, James is a former four-star recruit and was one of the top 100 players in his class. He tore his Achilles his freshman year and elected to redshirt, then returned to start every game for Louisville in the two following years.
Scoring in double-digits in 22 of 32 games this season, James can shoot from three-point range or drive to the basket, displaying an impressive array of moves given his relative youth.
He's a big get for the Wolfpack and should help keep the team afloat as they transition to life after Horne. It'll be difficult to repeat a Final Four run, though it's important to keep the momentum rolling after the spectacular postseason.
There are still holes left to fill on the roster and Kevin Keatts should be proactive in finding more transfers. Nonetheless, the program is in a better spot today than it was yesterday.
James has two years of eligibility remaining and I'd bet he becomes a favorite in the fanbase sooner than later.
