The Charlotte Hornets have ushered in a new era since last season's trade deadline when they moved on from Gordon Hayward, Terry Rozier, and PJ Washington. They made their intentions of rebuilding clear when they hired Jeff Peterson as general manager, and Charles Lee as their new head coach.

The widespread consensus among Hornets fans was that the team would largely remain quiet this offseason while moving on from veterans and adding more future-focused assets.

The latest report from Sam Amico of Hoops Wire suggests that might not be the case. In a surprising twist, the Hornets are reportedly interested in acquiring Brandon Ingram from the New Orleans Pelicans.

NBA Rumors: Hornets Interested in Trading for Brandon Ingram

Ingram is entering the final year of his contract in New Orleans and since the Pelicans don't want to give him a contract extension, he is considered one of the likeliest players to be traded. A 26-year-old All-Star doesn't hit the trade block too often, so Charlotte's interest is understandable.

Whether this is a smart move by the Hornets depends on the package it would require to land Ingram. There is certainly value in adding a two-way forward who can score in bunches next to LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller. But if it takes multiple first-round picks and a young player of value like Mark Williams, it might not be worth it for Charlotte.

The Hornets are in the early stages of their rebuild. It will take a couple of years before they are a serious playoff contender. Rushing the process and giving out your first-round picks to become a play-in-level team with Ingram is likely not worth it. However, if he comes for a discounted price -- watching Ingram in Charlotte would be fun.
