Failed Panthers Quarterback Already Cut By New Team
By Joe Summers
Failed former Panthers QB Matt Corral was officially released by the Minnesota Vikings on Monday amid a slew of roster cuts, throwing a wrench into his NFL comeback attempt.
Corral joined the Vikings less than two weeks ago following J.J. McCarthy's stuning season-ending injury. He was always facing an uphill climb to make the final team, though his swift release indicates he didn't fare well during practice.
Originally a 2022 third-round pick by Carolina, Corral quickly flamed out of the NFL and spent this season in the UFL with the Birmingham Stallions.
Former Panthers QB Matt Corral Released by Vikings
All NFL teams must reduce their roster from 90 players to 53 by Tuesday at 4:00 PM. The Vikings saw enough to give Corral an opportunity but he'll now be looking for his next chance to earn a full-time gig.
He fared well in the UFL as a dual-threat QB yet threw a pair of interceptions in limited action. Corral struggled to avoid turnover-worthy plays during practice, ultimately leading to the Panthers' decision to move on.
During a celebrated career at Ole Miss, Corral threw for 8,287 yards with 57 TDs to 23 interceptions as a three-year starter. He added 1,138 yards on the ground, showcasing the athleticism that made him an intriguing NFL prospect in the first place.
The Panthers are happy with their QB room, especially after Bryce Young's impressive performance in the preseason finale. It's unlikely that Corral would receive another chance in Carolina, and you'll likely see him on the sidelines during UFL games in the 2024 season.
