3 Panthers Who Will Be Replaced on Day 2 of the NFL Draft
By Cem Yolbulan
Troy Hill, CB
The Panthers already lost their starting cornerback Donte Jackson in the trade that brought Diontae Johnson from the Steelers. They replaced him with Dane Jackson, who is slated to start opposite their star corner Jaycee Horn.
Dane Jackson is fine but he doesn't solve all of Panthers' problems. Plus, the depth behind him is less than ideal.
Carolina had to rely on veteran nickel Troy Hill for extended snaps last year after signing him to a one-year contract. He performed admirably in his age-32 season and earned himself another one-year deal.
However, relying on Hill as your slot corner to start the season is not the best situation. The Panthers should look to add another high-level defender to make Hill a full-time backup.
Like many teams in the second round, the Panthers will have their eyes on versatile cornerback Cooper DeJean of Iowa. It would behoove Carolina to try to trade up for him to ensure they end up with him as he has the ability to play any defensive backfield position and is probably the best available player left in the draft. Kool-Aid McKinstry and Kamari Lassiter are other options worth considering for the Panthers.
The Panthers will almost certainly draft a cornerback at some point in the draft. How early they will select one will determine the future of Troy Hill.
