3 Concerning Observations from Wake Forest's Disappointing Loss to Notre Dame
By Joe Summers
3. The Demon Deacons Will Go as Far as Hunter Sallis Takes Them
This feels like an obvious takeaway but it was never more obvious than Tuesday night. He had his worst game of the year immediately after having perhaps his best, scoring a season-low seven points with the four turnovers. Thus, Wake couldn't get any consistent offense going or adjust to Notre Dame's slow pace in the second half.
In games that Sallis goes nuclear, like when he shot 11-13 against Duke, 12-17 against NC State, or 7-9 against Syracuse, the Demon Deacons will win. For the times that he struggles and shoots below 50%, the offense doesn't have enough shot creators to make up the difference.
Sallis is one of the most talented and dangerous guards in the country, capable of catching fire at any moment. It's not hard to picture him carrying Wake Forest on a deep, magical March run, though it's also not hard to imagine a subpar shooting game leading to an early exit.
There are three games left for the Demon Deacons to correct these mistakes and return to the form they showed against Duke. They'll be favored or near-favorites in every remaining game, then they can make their case in the ACC Tournament as well.
Here's hoping Sallis got his misses out of his system and is ready to roll.
