The Carolina Panthers came up just a bit short against the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs last week, losing 30-27.

The Panthers gave the Chiefs their best shot for all four quarters and didn’t quit, despite being down by double-digits in the fourth quarter. Carolina had a chance to hit on a big play in the fourth quarter as second-year quarterback Bryce Young went for a deep shot to rookie wide receiver Xavier Legette.

Young placed it perfectly for Legette, but he couldn’t come down with the catch. Luckily for the Panthers, they still scored on that drive as running back Chuba Hubbard found the end zone for a one-yard rushing touchdown.

On Monday, Legette told the media that he’s still not over his dropped pass in the fourth quarter. The rookie wide receiver believes that if he made the catch it would’ve put the Panthers in “right field position” and had time to get the ball back to hopefully win the game (h/t Carolina Blitz).

Legette also revealed that he texted Young stating, “I just basically tell him like it don’t get no better than that. I got to make them plays and I’m going to make them plays. And he sent me a text back like "man I believe in you 100% at the X position with the one-on-one and we gonna get it done.”

While you never want to see a player beat themselves about one play, if you are a Panthers fan, it's good to see Legette take accountability for not coming through. At the same time, Young’s response to the rookie is encouraging.

After Legette couldn’t come down with the catch, Young went back to the rookie on the play, who got five yards on 3rd and 8 at the Chiefs’ 47-yard line, setting up Carolina for a manageable fourth down.

Legette is the future of this Panthers’ offense and has given fans much to cheer for. He’ll have a chance to redeem himself on Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
