Panthers Sign WR in Wake of Worrying Xavier Legette Injury News
By Jovan Alford
With rookie wide receiver Xavier Legette likely out for Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals, the Carolina Panthers made a small roster move to address the WR unit.
On Tuesday, the Panthers signed wide receiver Dan Chisena from the practice squad to the active roster, per Joe Person of The Athletic. In addition to Chisena, Carolina also signed LB Jacoby Windman from the practice after Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus were placed on injured reserve.
In last week’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, Legette suffered a groin injury that forced him to exit in the third quarter. Without Legette on the field, Carolina must depend on Adam Thielen, Jalen Coker, David Moore, and Chisena.
The 27-year-old Chisena likely won’t get many targets in the passing game as Thielen, Coker, and rookie tight end Ja’Tavion Sanders should be the top go-to options for second-year QB Bryce Young.
However, the 6-foot-3 wide receiver has appeared in three games this season. Chisena had a six-yard reception in Carolina’s Week 13 overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The veteran wide receiver has been elevated twice from the Panthers’ practice squad this season after being released by the Arizona Cardinals in October. Chisena spent training camp and preseason with the Cardinals this summer after he signed a reserves/futures contract at the end of last season.
In the preseason, Chisena had five receptions (five targets) for 63 yards. The 27-year-old receiver has been a journeyman to start his NFL career, spending time with the Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings, and Pittsburgh Steelers.
The former Penn State wide receiver hasn’t had a chance to play a ton in his NFL career, but he’s been given a great opportunity with the Panthers. Chisena will try to show off his blazing 4.32 speed against the Cardinals on Sunday.
