Panthers Make Shocking RB Signing in Week 15 After Injuries
The Carolina Panthers are 3-10 on the season but have lost three straight games by one possession. During this losing streak, they've lost to the Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and Philadelphia Eagles. All of these teams will likely be in the postseason, showcasing how the Panthers have elevated their play.
The Panthers have an NFC showdown against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 15, but they made an addition at RB following the devastating news that rookie running back Jonathan Brooks tore his ACL.
Panthers News: Carolina Signed Playmaker Velus Jones
According to FOX Sports NFL Insider Jordan Schultz, the Panthers are signing RB/WR/KR Velus Jones Jr. from the Jaguars practice squad.
The Panthers are really thin at running back behind Chubba Hubbard. Miles Sanders is on IR with an ankle injury. Raheem Blackshear, who also handles punt and kickoff returns, is questionable with a chest injury.
They needed more bodies there, and Jones Jr. fits the bill. The 27-year-old was a third-round selection by the Chicago Bears in the 2022 NFL Draft but failed to live up to expectations. He entered the league as a WR, but during the summer of 2023, the Bears decided to convert him to tailback.
In his career, Jones Jr. has compiled 135 receiving yards, 165 rushing yards, and two total touchdowns. Meanwhile, as a kickoff returner, Jones Jr. has 1,042 return yards with a career-long 63-yard return.
A big reason why Jones Jr. had a lot of interest coming into the NFL was due to his speed. He ran a 4.31 40-yard dash at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine.
The Panthers are hoping he can give them some kind of stability as a returner and backup running back.
This is also a golden opportunity for the Tennessee product to revive his career, as the next four games give him a chance to impress the coaching staff and potentially carve out a roster spot going into the 2025 offseason.
