Panthers Immediately Re-Sign Impact Player After Kicking Him to Curb
By Joe Summers
The Carolina Panthers quickly re-signed DT Jayden Peevy to the practice squad on Thursday after waiving him on Tuesday. Releasing him in the first place was a surprise given his stellar performance in limited snaps, so fans could reasonably expect him to get back to the active roster soon.
With defensive leader Derrick Brown done for the season, Carolina needs players to step up. Peevy currently leads the team in sacks (1.5) and the undrafted rookie has made a case he belongs in the defensive rotation.
Considering how poor the defense has looked in recent weeks, Peevy is someone Dave Canales should give more opportunities to.
Panthers Add DT Jayden Peevy to Practice Squad After Releasing Him
Despite not playing more than 42% of the snaps in any week, Peevy is an exciting young defender. His best game was in Week 3 against the Raiders, compiling three tackles, a sack and a deflected pass.
Defensive line coach Todd Wash said Peevy could be elevated for games, indicating the coaching staff's belief in him. A five-year player at Texas A&M, Peevy has ideal size and disruptive ability for the position.
He's six-foot-six and just under 300 pounds with impressive athleticism. Franchises like the Panthers need to hit on as many unheralded prospects as possible, especially given the salary cap implications of finding value with undrafted players.
The Panthers entered the campaign with significant promise that soon fell on its face. Bryce Young is perhaps the biggest bust in the last 15 years, and there's only small room for optimism based on David Tepper's embarrassing failings and the underwhelming roster.
Guys like Peevy can make a world of difference, so here's hoping he gets back on the field sooner than later.
