Panthers' Immediate Roster Move After Diontae Johnson Trade Has Fans Furious
The Carolina Panthers disappointed fans in a big way when they got virtually nothing in return for trading wide receiver Diontae Johnson. Things were made even worse when fans heard about the Panthers paying Johnson's salary and the potential compensatory picks the Baltimore Ravens stand to earn this offseason if they don't re-sign Johnson.
With frustration high, there's not much the team could have done on Wednesday to smooth things over. But adding some young talent to the wide receiver room could have helped. Considering trading Johnson is an admission that this year doesn't mean much and the team should build for the future, losing Johnson but bringing in an exciting young prospect could have been a great move.
They got the "young" part right, but totally missed the memo on "exciting." Carolina's first move after trading Johnson was to sign Dax Milne to the practice squad.
If you haven't heard of Milne (you're forgiven), he was a seventh-round pick by the Washington Commanders in the 2021 NFL Draft, having caught 101 passes over three seasons with BYU in his collegiate career. He caught 9 passes as a rookie and only 6 in 2022 before spending most of 2023 on the IR.
The Las Vegas Raiders brought Milne to training camp this summer, but cut him on August 27. No other NFL team has thought Milne was even worth a practice squad spot during the regular season.
So naturally, Dan Morgan couldn't miss this opportunity to bring him to Carolina.
The Panthers receiving room is unarguably the worst in the NFL. Xavier Legette, David Moore, Jalen Coker and Jonathan Mingo is a rough array of pass-catchers. And somehow the team managed to add another player to the group without making any sort of an upgrade.
Other wide receivers currently on thePanthers practice squad are Praise Olatoke (an international player), Deven Thompkins and Dan Chisena.
