Panthers' First Week 12 Injury Report Brings Major News on 4 Key Playmakers After Bye
While this is obviously a lost season for the Carolina Panthers in terms of any potential playoff success, there's still a lot on the line down the stretch. Dave Canales may well be coaching for his job, and this young offense is trying desperately to click in time to save Bryce Young's job too.
Trades and injuries have made it very hard for the unit to build any continuity though, and they've gone through the season without one of their top draft picks in Jonathon Brooks.
Things are starting to look up ahead of a very difficult Week 12 matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, however. The news on Miles Sanders isn't good, but Brooks is finally set to make his debut, and Adam Thielen will be back in action to give Young another target in the passing game. It's also important to note that left tackle Ikem Ekwonu will be back in action as well.
Jonathon Brooks, Adam Thielen, Miles Sanders' Injury Status Revealed for Panthers vs. Chiefs
Jonathon Brooks, who has yet to make his NFL debut thanks to the torn ACL he suffered last year in college, will suit up for the first time for the Panthers. Adam Thielen, who has been out since Week 3 with a hamstring injury, is expected to return after being activated from IR last week (even though he's not practicing on Monday). The bad news comes for Miles Sanders, who won't play against KC and remains week-to-week with his ankle injury.
When you consider the upward trajectory that Bryce Young and the Panthers offense are on, things start to get really interesting with more reinforcements back in the fold. Young's not been lights-out or anything, but he has led the Panthers to two straight wins, scoring 20-plus points in each of his last two starts.
Chuba Hubbard will continue being the engine that drives this offense, but Brooks is unquestionably an upgrade over Raheem Blackshear as the No. 2 option while Sanders is on the shelf. It could take some time for the exciting rookie to live up to his potential as he works to shake off the rust and get up to speed at the NFL level, but if Brooks even shows flashes of why he was a second-round pick despite the injury then the Panthers' one-two punch in the backfield could suddenly be one of the best in the NFL.
In the passing game, Thielen is the Panthers' second-most efficient receiver on the season. His 9.1 yards per target is second on the team, only trailing Jalen Coker's 10.1. When you consider how much run David Moore (5.5 yards per target) and Jonathan Mingo (4.7) have been getting, it's hard to imagine Thielen not making things significantly easier for Young.
And even better, Young should get some more time to throw with Ekwonu back on his blindside. Ekwonu missed the last two games with an ankle injury, but he's been very solid in 2024, ranking 22nd among 79 graded tackles on PFF for the season.
Will all this be enough to upset the Kansas City Chiefs as they look to bounce back from their first loss of the season? Probably not, no. The Panthers are 10.5-point home underdogs for a reason. But Carolina's focus is not necessarily on the result of games at this point, but rather on how the process looks.
This offense has a tough test against an elite defense, but with most of their tools finally in place at the same time, a difficult matchup will be a great litmus test to see just how much potential the unit has in 2025 and beyond.
