Panthers Defender Admits Embarrassing Bryce Young Update
So we know Bryce Young is finally getting another start for the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. And we know the team is completely setting him up to fail against the Denver Broncos. We know he's been one of the worst-performing starting quarterbacks the entire NFL, let alone just the Panthers, has seen in a long time.
But there's one thing we didn't know about his performance after being demoted to the scout team until Jadeveon Clowney admitted it to the press on Friday. And admitting it may have been a mistake. In an effort to hype up Young, Clowney has instead completely embarrassed the Panthers defense.
Clowney came out and admitted that Young had been "saucing" up the Panthers defense, saying he was throwing dimes on them. I get standing up for your quarterback in the face of public criticism, but really?
We know this Panthers defense can't stop the pass — their 7.6 net yards per attempt allowed are the most in the NFL, they rank bottom-10 in PFF's coverage grade and dead last in pass rush grade. But I don't think anyone suspected things were this bad.
Really, what is the last defense Bryce Young "sauced up"? It certainly hasn't happened in 2024.
Of course, this is the same Panthers defense that just gave up 40 points to the Washington Commanders, largely behind their backup quarterback Marcus Mariota. It's the NFL's worst pass defense by a big margin.
So whether Clowney is just trying to hype up his quarterback or not, it's certainly believable. But that's still not a glowing testimony for Young. He can light up the worst defense in the NFL? Great. Bo Nix will be able to do that on Sunday too.
But for Young, shifting from looking good against the Panthers defense in practice to facing an elite Denver Broncos defense, which is arguably the NFL's best against the pass, is going to be a nightmare transition.
At least he gets some continuity, though. With Adam Thielen and Diontae Johnson ruled out, he'll be working with more than a couple of scout team wide receivers on Sunday.
