The NFL world is on fire right now since the NFL league tampering period opened at Noon EST. Teams are handing out a ton of money to add players to their rosters. Carolina handed out a massive contract extension to CB Jaycee Horn, making him the highest-paid CB in the league.
They didn't stop there and made another massive addition to the secondary. According to Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are giving safety Tre'von Moehrig a three-year, $51 million deal.
Moehrig came into the league as a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Las Vegas Raiders. In 64 career games, the TCU product has recorded 297 total tackles, 29 pass deflections, and six interceptions.
In 2024, Moehrig logged the fourth-most snaps (1,099) at safety. Per PFF, he had a 67.5 overall grade and an 87.5 run-defense grade (7th among 170 eligible safeties). The 25-year-old was one of the best safeties on the open market, and the Panthers were able to lock him down.
Carolina's defense needed a lot of work, and this addition showcases that they realized that. In 2024, the Panthers were last in total defense (404.5) and last in scoring defense (31.4) while being 23rd in pass defense (224.7).
The Panthers know that unit needed a jolt of energy, and this signing indicates that. Moehrig is an ascending player whose best days are believed to be ahead of him. Another underrated factor of this signing is Moehrig's health. He's played in at least 15 games in all four seasons and looks to bring that over to the Panthers.
Carolina was also in the Milton Williams sweepstakes before landing with the New England Patriots. Despite failing to land him, the Panthers will be aggressive in the free-agent market and find ways to improve this roster for the 2025 season.
