In Sunday’s win over the New York Giants, the Carolina Panthers saw Miles Sanders carted off the field in the second quarter with a foot/ankle injury. Sanders was questionable to return but did not come back into the game.

Before exiting Sunday’s game, the veteran running back had two carries for five yards. On Monday, Panthers head coach Dave Canales provided an update on Sanders.

According to Joe Person of The Athletic, Canales said Sanders is seeing a specialist for his foot/ankle injury. That update doesn’t sound good for the veteran running back, who has struggled this season.

In 10 games this season, the former Eagles running back has 139 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries (3.7 yards per carry). He added a pedestrian 21 receptions (26 targets) for 98 yards.

Miles Sanders has had a rough first two seasons with Carolina after signing a huge four-year deal in 2023. Sanders struggled to find consistency on the ground last season (3.3 yards per carry) and was overtaken by Chuba Hubbard.

Hubbard is still the lead running back in Carolina. However, the Panthers also drafted rookie Jonathon Brooks in the 2024 NFL Draft, who was activated from the NFI list after suffering a torn ACL last year at the University of Texas.

With Hubbard running the ball well and Brooks’ return imminent, Sanders is likely on his way out of Carolina in the offseason.

In the weeks leading up to the trade deadline, Sanders seemed like a logical trade candidate for teams looking for RB help. However, the Panthers couldn’t find any suitors. The veteran RB has a potential out in his contract for 2025 (2 yr, $13.2 million; $2.95 million in dead cap), according to Spotrac.

After not much trade interest, the Panthers could consider releasing Sanders, allowing the veteran running back to find the best opportunity for him this offseason.
