There haven’t been a lot of great moments in the history of the Carolina Panthers but one of them happened in the mid-2010s. Carolina was quarterbacked by Cam Newton and while there were some inconsistencies in his play, he led the Panthers to three seasons with double-digit wins including a 15-1 record on the way to reaching the Super Bowl in 2015.

That season served as a launching pad for several members of the coaching staff including head coach Ron Rivera, current Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott and former Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks.

But one member has had a roller coaster of a career and may have been given a lifeline to save his plummeting stock.

Former Panthers QB Coach Ken Dorsey Could Be Hired By the Cowboys

According to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, the Dallas Cowboys are working towards hiring Ken Dorsey as their next quarterback coach. Garafolo cautioned that a deal hasn’t been finalized but the 43-year-old is expected to join Brian Schottenheimer’s staff in the near future.

After a five-year playing career in the NFL, Dorsey became a scout for the Panthers in 2011 and started his coaching career as the team’s quarterback coach in 2013. Dorsey picked a good time to dive into the coaching world as it coincided with Newton’s arrival in Carolina and he parlayed that to join McDermott’s staff in Buffalo in 2019.

Dorsey worked his way up to the Bills offensive coordinator position in 2022 and helped Buffalo rank first in scoring offense and third in total offense in his first season. Just as he was starting to look like a future head coach, Dorsey was fired by the Bills midway through the 2023 season and joined the Cleveland Browns at the request of Deshaun Watson in 2024.

The decision to go to Cleveland didn’t work out as Watson struggled before tearing his achilles. Things never clicked for the Browns the entire season as they ranked 26th in total offense and 31st in scoring offense before Dorsey was fired at the end of the year.

Dorsey was rumored to be a candidate for the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator position when Schottenheimer was hired last month but Dallas brought in Klayton Adams from the Cardinals. While Dorsey didn’t get the OC job, any spot on Dallas’ staff serves as an opportunity to turn his career around and he’ll get to work with another strong quarterback in Dak Prescott.

After working with Newton in Carolina and Josh Allen in Buffalo, teams may be willing to forgive what happened in Cleveland. But Dorsey will need to make good on Schottenheimer’s decision in order to revive his coaching career to where it was a few years ago.
