Failed Panthers Signing Gets Surprise 2nd Chance From NFC Contender
The Carolina Panthers offense's top priority is building for the future. If Bryce Young is going to get another shot in 2025, having him build chemistry with his young wide receivers is important. And if he's not, developing the young playmakers as much as possible to have a strong group competing to make the roster next year is similarly important.
There's not an overwhelming amount of talent in that receiver room either, so if a young wideout can't stick on the Panthers practice squad then it's really not a good sign about his ability to hang around at the NFL level at all.
That's what made it so surprising when an NFC contender decided to give a Panthers castoff a shot. The Washington Commanders gave Mike Strachan a second chance on their practice squad this week.
The Panthers signed the now 27-year-old Strachan back in 2023, and he even got a shot on the active roster before being a training camp cut in August 2024. He remained unemployed until October, when the Commanders signed him to their practice squad. They then released him on November 6, only to apparently decide he deserved another chance this week.
Strachan has appeared in only 23 games over his now three-and-a-half season NFL career, catching 6 passes for 130 yards on 15 targets.
The fact that Strachan was at home on the couch for nearly two weeks and the Panthers didn't move to bring him back (not to mention any other team) makes it particularly surprising that a contender like the Commanders would decide to bring him back.
The chance he makes any impact in Washington is virtually nil though, so Panthers fans don't need to worry too much about it having been a mistake to let him go.
