3 Panthers Most Likely to Be Traded by the 2024 Deadline
By Jovan Alford
The 2024 season has been a disaster for the Carolina Panthers as fans thought things would be different with a new head coach (Dave Canales). However, the Panthers have picked up where they left off last season and could be on the verge of landing a top-10 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.
With Carolina likely playing for next season, it would be in its best interest to trade one or several players for draft capital. Luckily for the Panthers, they have one of the more highly coveted wide receivers on the trade market in Diontae Johnson.
Johnson appears to be a prime candidate to be moved by the Nov. 5 deadline after seeing three wide receivers (Davante Adams, Amari Cooper, and DeAndre Hopkins) traded over the last two weeks.
Along with Johnson, Adam Thielen and Jonathan Mingo could be on the move as Carolina is still trying to figure out who will be part of its plans. Below, we’ll highlight three players most likely not to be with the organization after the deadline.
1. Diontae Johnson, WR
The trade winds are swirling around Johnson, who has become the top receiver on the trade market after seeing Adams, Cooper, and Hopkins all go off the board.
On Saturday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that the Panthers have received multiple inquiries on the former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver. Schefter added that sources believe Carolina is seeking a mid-round pick in return for Johnson.
Carolina might have trouble getting a mid-round pick in exchange for Johnson. The Panthers have one of the worst offenses in the league and he’s scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason.
This season, Johnson leads the Panthers in targets (58), receptions (30), receiving yards (357), and touchdowns (3). When Carolina acquired the 28-year-old receiver in the offseason from the Steelers, it seemed like a perfect fit on paper.
But as we said, the Panthers’ offense has struggled to get on track as the team benched young quarterback Bryce Young for Andy Dalton earlier this season. Nonetheless, Carolina might not be able to get a third-round pick for Johnson.
However, if they can get a fourth pick in the 2025 NFL draft and another pick in 2026, they must take the deal. If the Panthers were in a better position, Johnson paired with Thielen, and rookie Xavier Legette would be a good trio to work with.
But that’s not where they are as an organization right now. The Panthers must try to build in the draft and hope something clicks.
