3. Deven Thompkins, WR/KR
One area that the Panthers could use more depth in is the wide receiver position. The team's WR room essentially consists of Adam Thielen, Xavier Legette, Jalen Coker, and David Moore with little to be excited about beyond them, leaving the door open for a potential reunion with Deven Thompkins.
The 25-year-old playmaker joined the Panthers last offseason after spending his first two campaigns with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, catching 22-of-35 targets for 135 receiving yards and a touchdown. He also demonstrated solid special teams upside during that time, returning 31 punts for 295 yards (9.5 yards per attempt) and 28 kickoffs for another 590 yards (21.1 YPA).
Thompkins didn't play the biggest role with the Panthers last season, spending 51 snaps on offense with another 23 played on special teams. He showed reliability by catching all four of his targets for 20 yards and a touchdown while also averaging a career-high 26.8 yards on five kick returns.
Even though that performance wasn't good enough to land an instant re-signing, Thompkins might not be done with the Panthers just yet. Not only does the ex-Utah State WR's speed (4.35-second 40-yard dash) make him an asset on special teams, but head coach Dave Canales might be interested in using that quickness more often on offense now that Thompkins has spent a full season with the team.
If the Panthers still need a WR or two for training camp after the NFL draft, don't be shocked if Thompkins returns to help inject some competition into the situation.
