The former Texas offensive coordinator is reportedly being brought in to lead the Wolfpack offense.

Only three days after firing co-offensive coordinator Des Kitchings, the Wolfpack have a new man in charge of the offense. Reports are that former Texas offensive coordinator Tim Beck will become the next offensive coordinator at N.C. State and look to revive an offense that was brutal for head coach Dave Doeren in 2019.

Beck was hired to be Texas head coach Tom Herman’s offensive coordinator in 2017 and was demoted to quarterbacks coach earlier this month after Texas limped to a disappointing 7-5 season. Beck will take a promotion to move conferences.

Beck has benefitted from coaching and learning under an incredibly impressive group of head coaches. His career started as a graduate assistant under legendary Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder. He worked for Kansas’ Mark Mangino, coaching the wide receivers and he was the passing game coordinator for the Jayhawks’ squad that won 12 games and the Orange Bowl in 2007.

He coached running backs and eventually was the offensive coordinator for Bo Pelini in Nebraska, helping Roy Helu Jr. and Adrian Martinez to go over 1,000 yards. Martinez was only the third freshman quarterback in NCAA history to run for over 1,000 yards.

He was the co-offensive coordinator at Ohio State for the team’s National Championship run, leading Cardale Jones to the National title under Urban Meyer.

After accepting the job in Texas, the Longhorns finished 19th in the nation in points per game this season. He worked with quarterback Sam Ehlinger to throw for 3,462 and 29 touchdowns. The Longhorns scored less than 27 points only twice but still finished with a mediocre record, mostly due to the 74th ranked defense in the nation.

The main concern for the Wolfpack with Beck instead of Kitchings will be recruiting. Kitchings was rated the no. 1 recruiter in the ACC and helped the Wolfpack turn the tide and average the 6th best-recruiting class in the ACC under Doeren.

Those recruiting rankings didn’t translate to wins on the field, however, as the Wolfpack finished 108th in points per game this season in Kitchings only season as offensive coordinator.

N.C. State returns two of the three quarterbacks who started a game in 2019 along with both Ricky Person Jr. and Zonovan “Bam” Knight in the running backs room. Beck will have plenty to work with and a relatively easy schedule to get the team loaded up.

Beck will bring a wealth of diverse experience and proven ability as a play-caller and teacher. It’s a home run of a hire for Doeren, who took advantage of a situation developing half-way across the country to get an excellent coach. As Doeren continues to overhaul his staff, continuing to make smart hires like Beck will go a long way towards returning N.C. State to nine-win seasons.
