Carolina Hurricanes: Worst Draft Picks of the Decade
By Ryan Henkel
One thing that the Carolina Hurricanes have done this decade is replenished the prospect pool after it nearly ran out with former general manager Jim Rutherford. But, not every pick has been a good one.
In all honesty, the Hurricanes have drafted pretty well this decade. Prior to this decade, the Canes had some really atrocious drafting that makes everything after look pretty okay. Trust me, some picks this decade have not worked out, but looking back it has gotten a whole hell of a lot better. Still, there have been a few head scratchers in the past decade and some that have really just not worked out.
At a certain point, the problem isn’t only on scouting and poor decision making on the positional needs of the franchise, but more so into the area of development. Four of the teams first-round picks, three of which were in the top 10, are no longer with the team.
Does it make them a bad pick if they didn’t work out with the team or were they not given the proper time and attention to develop? Most of these players were coveted highly by the hockey world and scouts and it just so happened that they were busts?
It is unlikely and more so shines the light on the Hurricanes poor developments in the early part of the decade, but nonetheless the Hurricanes could have potentially made better use of the picks in relation to what they got from them. Maybe the Canes would have stifled their development too but it’s a look at what hasn’t worked in comparison to what has.
