The Carolina Hurricanes have assembled quite a strong team this season and a lot of the talent on the roster has been built through the draft. In the last decade, Carolina has made quite a few outstanding selections.

When it comes to drafting, having a high first-round pick should help turn your team around. Not every player is a game changer, but these picks should be for elite talent. The best picks after those are the diamonds in the rough. The late round picks nobody else was looking at that turn out to be amazing NHL players. A roster isn’t just a top line or a top pair, there are 23 players on a team and each has a role.

Through the decade, the Canes have drafted in the top 15 quite a few times. Some of them successes and some of them not so much, but it isn’t just those first round players that make up the roster. The Canes have a mix of players who were early round picks and a few from later rounds that really helps balance out the team.

Drafting is hard because you are essentially betting. Betting on whether or not a player can bring his game to the next level or whether or not a player fits with a particular system. The further in you go, the more of a wild bet it becomes.

The Hurricanes have struck gold on there bets quite a few times in this decade, but who were the best picks they’ve made?
