Through the first half of the season, Carolina ranks 25th in passing yards per game, and ranks in the bottom-third of the league in passing touchdowns. While that may seem like a quarterback issue, the Panthers don’t have a single qualified receiver in the top 25 in yards of separation per route according to NFL Next Gen Stats. The team’s top-two receivers, DJ Moore and Curtis Samuel, rank in the bottom-third of that statistic.

Despite the rankings, the Panthers’ receivers have been far from bad. Moore is on pace for about 1,200 yards and Samuel is having a career year and has emerged as Carolina’s top deep threat. On top of that, Greg Olsen has stayed healthy all year and continues to be a safety blanket for the Panthers’ quarterbacks. The recent addition of Donte Moncrief off waivers could also pay dividends by season’s end. While this group has been far from spectacular, they’ve done a solid job all year with a backup quarterback at the helm.
