Missed Field Goal Costs N.C. State Road Upset Over Clemson

In what turned out to be a magical season for the Clemson Tigers (14-1, National Champions), the entire dream season could’ve ended in early October. What would’ve been one of the biggest upsets of the entire college football season and the biggest win of Dave Doeren’s tenure instead ended with a missed field goal at the end of regulation and with Clemson taking advantage to stay undefeated.

N.C. State put itself in prime position to win the game late. After tying the score at 17 early in the 4th quarter, quarterback Ryan Finley led the Wolfpack on a potential game-winning drive and set up embattled kicker Kyle Bambard for a 35-yard field goal with two seconds left.

Bambard’s initial kick was true, but Clemson had called a timeout to ice the kicker, nullifying the kick. His follow-up sailed wide right, sending the crowd into a frenzy and crushing the spirits of every Wolfpack fan for years to come.

In total, Bambard missed three field goals in the game and N.C. State ended up losing in overtime. What could’ve been will undoubtedly haunt Wolfpack fans forever.
