Super Bowl XXXVIII – Vinatieri’s Last Second Kick Pushes Patriots Past Panthers

After posting the worst season in Panthers’ history in 2002 (1-15), the Panthers reloaded and won the NFC South, kickstarting a magical playoff run that saw them dispatch the Greatest Show on Turf and the Philadelphia Eagles on the road in the NFC Championship.

The Cardiac Cats found themselves in a dogfight in the Super Bowl, tying the game at 29 on a touchdown pass to Ricky Proehl with only 1:08 remaining.

Unfortunately, that’s where every Panther fan would probably like to have a redo. Kicker John Kasay booted the kickoff out of bounds, giving the Patriots terrific field position that future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady took advantage of, setting up Adam Vinatieri for a game-winning 41-yard game-winning field goal as time expired.

The Panthers would have to wait over a full decade to have another opportunity….only to fall short again.
