In Rod Brind’Amour’s first instance as head coach, Justin Williams was named captain and the Hurricanes had one of the best starts in franchise history. Jordan Staal scored the first goal of the season, while Carolina all-star Sebastian Aho saw an offensive explosion to his game after seeing slow production to start the past two seasons.

Carolina had taken a huge gamble trading off multiple former first-round draftees, the first being leading goal-scorer Jeff Skinner and the other two, Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm, in a package deal for Dougie Hamilton, Micheal Ferland and Adam Fox.

The Hurricanes brought in Petr Mrazek and Calvin de Haan from free agency and claimed veteran journeyman Curtis McElhinney off of waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs.
