With Francis having been traded near the end of 2004 and the next season seeing a lockout, Rod Brind’Amour began his first stint as captain of the Carolina Hurricanes this season. Eric Staal posted five goals, scoring in all four games to start the season. First goal of the season was scored by Radim Vrbata.

Rookie Cam Ward came in relief for Martin Gerber in game one and started the next three games, earning his first win in a shutout that saw him stone Mario Lemieux, Ziggy Palffy, and Sidney Crosby.
