The first NHL season in North Carolina after the relocating of the Hartford Whalers to Raleigh. The first goal of the season was scored by captain Kevin Dineen. The Hurricanes totaled 195 total penalty minutes in the first seven games of the season. That’s essentially a third of the total PIMs the Canes accrued in all of last season (604).
72 of those PIMs came in the second game of the season against the Pittsburgh Penguins. The game saw four fights, two misconduct penalties, and three-game misconduct penalties.
