No. 3: Black “City” Edition (2017-2018)

The first of the Hornets’ “City” uniforms, this uniform was one of the coldest looks of the 2017-2018 season. In what has become an annual update of the City uniform, the original is perhaps the Hornets’ best-looking edition to date, despite its unfortunate exit.

Although this look is fairly simple, the white outline of black numbers on the black uniform looks really neat and clean. It’s something the Hornets have had only that one season and hasn’t reappeared since. The appearance of the purple and teal “webbing” going down the sides of the uniform looks awesome and is a step up from the team’s current City uniforms, which feature a simple gray stripe.

Perhaps the coolest aspect of this particular uniform is the “BUZZ CITY” across the chest. The mantra continues to be on the current City uniforms, and up until recently was the organization’s go-to hashtag on social media. Buzz City is a nickname that not only fits the Hornets’ name and mascot but also has roots in Charlotte’s history surrounding the American Revolution (General Cornwallis referred to Charlotte as a “hornet’s nest of rebellion”).
