Defensive Line: A+

As the Panthers transition to a 3-4 base defense for the first time in team history, the preseason was quite an encouragement. With Gerald McCoy and Kawann Short lining up at defensive end, Carolina should generate quite an amount of pressure on the outside. Add Dontari Poe inside, and you have an elite starting front three. Depth pieces Kyle Love and former first-rounder, Vernon Butler figure to rotate in with Poe, while Marquis Haynes has emerged in a big way this preseason. The sheer talent and potential of this group is enough to earn an A+ rating, even if we haven’t yet seen much of them together.

Linebackers/Edge: A-

If this were a mark of purely edge defenders, the grade would be an easy A+. The Panthers ranked fourth in sacks, pouring in 16 all total. Rookie Brian Burns was a monster in limited action, totaling 4.0 sacks and a forced fumble. Starting linebackers, Luke Kuechly and Shaq Thompson played well when they were on the field, and undrafted rookie, Jordan Kunaszyk led the team in tackles. Outside linebacker depth shouldn’t be a problem, however, Jermaine Carter and Andre Smith did face their share of growing pains. If Kuechly and Thompson remain healthy, Carolina should have one of the best linebacker corps in football. If they go down, things become much more questionable.
