Stock Up: Joey Slye

It’s not often that a rookie kicker steals the show of a preseason football game, but that’s just what Slye did on Thursday night. Slye was 3-3 on field goal attempts, including a 55-yarder that sailed easily through the uprights.

Slye isn’t likely to make the team, with Graham Gano being firmly established, but if he kicks like this, he will at worst make the Panthers’ practice squad and could very well find himself as the starting kicker for another team, including potentially the Jets, who lost starting kicker Chandler Catanzaro to retirement or potentially the Bears, who continue to have kicker struggles.

Slye also has a tragic backstory, as he promised his late brother he would make the NFL before his brother passed away from Leukemia.

It all adds up to an excellent debut from the former Virginia Tech kicker.
