Edge Rushers Stand Out
The Panthers selected Brian Burns in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft, a move the fans loved, and this investment is already looking promising in the first preseason game. In very limited snaps, Burns, who also started the game, quickly racked up two sacks in two of the first three drives of the game. It’s only preseason, but sacks on back-to-back series were very promising signs for the rookie who will be a big part of the rotation this fall.
Another standout was second year player Marquis Haynes, who played sparingly in 2018 after being drafted in the fourth round. However, with starters sitting out this game, Haynes got the start as the edge rusher opposite Burns and also put up impressive numbers, with four tackles, three TFLs, two sacks and four quarterback hits. The scheme change to the 3-4 will benefit the undersized Haynes and it will be interesting to see if he starts to earn more playing time if he can continue to show up like he did in tonight’s game.
