Tre Boston Returns to the Panthers Secondary

Following speculation throughout most of the off season, former Carolina Panthers safety Tre Boston will return to the team after signing a one year contract Wednesday.

The former Panthers safety played his first three seasons with the team before leaving for a new contract with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017. The following season Boston played with the Arizona Cardinals, where the team finished a disappointing 1-15 in 2018.

There was much speculation during the off season where Boston would go this off season with many speculating that he would eventually return to play for the Panthers

Boston is a Welcome Addition to A Secondary with Depth Issues Last Season

The Panthers already had Eric Reid on the roster, but outside of him and Colin Jones, the Panthers safety position wasn’t much to brag about in 2018.

Boston not only brings depth to the position, but someone who already has plenty of experience playing in a defensive coaching scheme similar to what he played in when he was originally with the team from 2014-2016.

The experience and familiarity with the system will be needed for the relatively inexperience secondary in Charlotte. As our own Daniel Lacy broke down a few weeks ago, most of the players who play the position aren’t really the big names that fans want at the position.

"While fans are panicking over the lack of big names at this position, it is really nothing new for this team. Historically, safety has never really been a position the team has placed much of an emphasis on, with the only ones throughout the franchise’s 24 years who were even serviceable being Mike Minter, Charles Godfrey, Deon Grant, Chris Harris and Kurt Coleman, with Minter and Godfrey being the only ones among that group who even stayed with the team for longer than three seasons. Obviously, give Reid a couple more years of the way he played last year and you can add him to that list, and you could maybe make an argument for Tre Boston as well, but it’s still a position that has pretty much always seemed to lack talent on this team."

Time Will Tell About How Boston will Fit In

This signing couldn’t have come at a better time, as the team started it’s training camp just last week and felt it necessary to bring in Boston just after that first week was done.

The former Tar Heel will get his first chance to prove how much he can contribute to the team when the Panthers play their first preseason game next week against the Chicago Bears next Thursday.

I personally think Boston will do just fine, but it will be a good indicator if he will by playing against the Matt Nagy offense which was pretty solid last season.
